Citric acid powder is a versatile and must-have baking ingredient for your home or commercial kitchen. Food-grade citric acid powder can be used for a variety of applications, such as enhancing the flavor profiles of beverages, culinary cuisines, and baked goods. Natural citric acid powder can also be used as a cleaning agent and can even be incorporated into skincare products. In this article, we are going to share some of the nifty features of natural and organic citric acid powder, as well as a recipe for homemade guacamole!
What Is Citric Acid Powder?
Discovered in 1917, citric acid powder actually comes from mold. And yes, you read that correctly. The mold by the name of “Aspergillus niger” is what creates this magical powder. Uniquely, the mold metabolizes sucrose or glucose, which proves to be more efficient than extracting it directly from citrus fruits. Citric acid powder is actually more commonly referred to as sour salt because of its appearance and taste – not to mention its candy-like appearance.
How to Use Citric Acid in Your Kitchen
Keep organic and natural citric acid powder on hand to incorporate into your beverages, desserts, and cuisines. Having a supply of sour salt in your pantry can provide you with endless possibilities for enhancing everyday recipes. Add bold flavor to your favorite dishes with food-grade citric acid powder.
Use pure citric acid powder as a natural preservative for fruits and vegetables to keep them fresh longer. Another reason to use citric acid powder is that it helps to prevent oxidation, so your vegetables and fruits maintain their colors without turning brown.
What Food-Grade Applications Can I Use Citrus Acid Powder For?
As mentioned earlier, citric acid powder is versatile in your kitchen for your homemade recipes. Citric acid powder can enhance flavors, preserve various foods, and even ripen them! The reason why citric acid powder is essential to preserving food is that it prevents bacteria from growing. Therefore, sour salt is a great addition to jams, jellies, gelatin desserts, and other canned food products.
Many culinary and baking recipes call for pure citric acid powder as it adds a tart or sour flavor that complements the other flavors of the dish. Using citric acid in cooking applications, when making culinary dishes like sauces, marinades, stews, and soups, helps to bring out the flavor profile. Citric acid for baking cookies, cakes, and muffins helps activate the baking soda, creating the leavening effect you are looking for in your finished product.
Sour salt is also essential in candy making, as it imparts a tart or sour flavor to candies. In cheese making, citric acid powder is often used to speed the process up. Many types of cheeses, including mozzarella and ricotta, are made with pure citric acid powder.
In the beverage industry, many juices, iced teas, co*cktails, and lemonades incorporate citric acid powder to enhance the overall flavor profile. Citric acid powder can also be used to make both ciders and wine, as it’s used to help adjust the acidity levels and boost the flavor of these types of beverages.
Fun fact: most companies all over the globe use citric acid powder as a flavor enhancer in beverages.
