Unicorn Overlord is full of unique characters to add to the Liberation Army. While you can always recruit mercenaries at Forts and several characters join your army automatically as you play through Unicorn Overlord's story, a few characters in Unicorn Overlord can only be recruited by performing specific actions during missions or by finding them on the map. Here's how you can get them.

How to Recruit Characters in Unicorn Overlord

Alain

Alain is Unicorn Overlord's main character, so you'll get him right from the start, and you'll use him basically all the time. One down!

Scarlett

Lex

Lex is a Fighter, and one of the earliest characters in Unicorn Overlord to join your team. A childhood friend of Alain, he trained with the young prince under Josef and joins the Liberation Army from the jump.

Lex automatically joins Alain during the first Main Quest, The Ring of the Unicorn. He becomes a permanent member of your army after claiming the first garrison from Palevia Town.

Josef

Josef is a Paladin, one of the earliest soldiers to join the Liberation Army, and Alain's loyal mentor and retainer. He trains the young prince in the art of war and plays a major role in Unicorn Overlord's story.

Josef joins your army automatically during the first Main Quest, The Ring of the Unicorn, after claiming the first garrison from Palevia Town, and unlike other Characters you get early, he will already be promoted to an advanced class. Be careful when using him early on, as he will eat up experience that could be better spent on lower-level characters.

Chloe

A Soldier and one of the earliest characters that joins the Liberation Army, Chloe is a close friend of Alain and trained alongside him under Josef. In fact, she's so close with Alain that she often forgets he's actually royalty.

Chloe joins your army during the first Main Quest, The Ring of the Unicorn. She becomes a member of your team after claiming the first garrison from Palevia Town.

Hodrick

A loyal retainer that served Alain's mother when she was Queen, you'll recruit Hodrick automatically during The Ring of the Unicorn. After you defeat him in combat, Alain will use the Ring of the Unicorn to lift the curse clouding Hodrick's mind, and he'll join the Liberation Army.

Clive

A Knight of the Ashen Blue who joins the Liberation Army early on, Clive's skill helped him attain knighthood at an early age. He worked with Josef to set the stage for the rise of the Liberation Army upon Alain's arrival in Cornia.

Clive can be recruited during the Call to Action Main Quest at Ouvrir Harbor. He will automatically join as a unit at the start of the battle.

Travis

Travis is a Thief who joins the Liberation Army early on and one of the core characters in Unicorn Overlord. Travis is a spy by trade, but he's also a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield.

Travis can be recruited during the Call to Action Main Quest. He will automatically join as a unit at the start of the battle.

Aubin

Aubin is a Housecarl, and the leader of the Sand Scorpions mercenary group. He is also one of many boss characters who can be recruited to your side.

Aubin can be recruited during the Call to Action Main Quest. After defeating him at the end of the Main Quest, Alain can spare Aubin's life and offer him a place in the Liberation Army by paying for his services, which he accepts.

Rolf

Rolf is a Hunter, and one of the first characters you can recruit by completing a Side Quest. A member of the Cornia Resistance, Rolf fights against the Zenoiran Army and protects villagers from bandits.

You can recruit Rolf during the A Solitary Resistance Side Quest. Rolf will join you after you defeat Gammel and the Black Talon Bandits that have taken over the nearby Coquillage Village, regardless of whether you let Gammel go or not.

Bruno

Bruno is a Gladiator and one of the first characters you can recruit by completing a Side Quest. A former member of the Tricorn Mercenaries who used to fight alongside Travis and Berengaria, Bruno assumed command of the Tricorns until Zenoira defeated him. After his defeat, he became the general in charge of the Thulust region.

You can recruit Bruno during the As the Tricorn Ride Side Quest. Bruno will join you at Travis's request after you defeat him.

Sharon

Sharon is a Cleric, and one of the early characters you can recruit by completing Side Quests. A member of the Palevian Orthodoxy and stationed as a nurse at the Rondmort Church, she is friend to the angel Ochlys. A devout and friendly cleric, Sharon offers her services as a battlefield healer after the Liberation Army helps her out.

You can recruit Sharon by completing The Winged Knight Side Quest. She'll offer to join you after your army teams with Ochlys to free her from the Black Talon Bandits regardless of how you deal with Mandrin, the Black Talon's leader - though killing him will help you recruit Ochlys more quickly.

Ochlys

Ochlys is a Feathersword and one of the many characters you can recruit by completing a s Side Quest. Ochlys is one the Palevian Orthodoxy Angels and member of the Heavenswing Knights of Albion and has been tasked by the Pontifex to retrieve Divine Shards, which brings her to the former kingdom of Cornia. She is also close friends with Sharon. As a result, you must accept Sharon's offer to join your party before you can recruit Ochlys.

You can recruit Ochlys after completing The Winged Knight, where she'll temporarily join your party. To get her permanently, however, you'll need to complete An Angel's Request, which requires you to find 30 Divine Shards in the Overworld and spend them at her store. If you choose not to spare the Black Talon leader Mandrin during The Winged Knight quest, and allow Ochlys to deal with him, she will award you with 15 Divine Shards, reducing the amount you'll need to find on your own to recruit her.

Yahna

Yahna is a Witch who will join the Liberation Army during the Main Quest and is a core character in the story. Yahna is something of a legendary Witch whose youthful appearance masks a magical secret, and who has dedicated her life to protecting her village and people from Zenoiran encroachment.

You can recruit Yahna during The Ravaged Swamp Main Quest, which you'll come across on your way to rescue Scarlett. She'll join your army at the start of the battle, and remain with you permanently once the Quest ends.

Auch

Auch is a Wizard who can be recruited after you defeat him during a Side Quest. Desperate to earn his mother's respect, Auch is serving as a researcher of the Thilde Ruins under the employ of the Zenoiran Empire, but soon realizes that joining the Liberation Army might offer a better path.

You can recruit Auch by completing The Self-Effacing Sorcerer Side Quest. Defeat his team of wizards and choose to spare his life, and Auch will offer to join your army.

Mordon

Adel

Adel is a Knight you can recruit by completing a Side Quest. A Knight of the Ashen Blue who fought a valiant but ultimately losing effort against Zenoira alongside Clive, Adel devoted himself to protecting the people of his province until he ran into Alain.

Adel can be recruited during The Province of Famine Side Quest. He will join your army as soon as the quest begins.

Berenice

Berenice is a Sellsword that can be recruited fairly early by completing a Side Quest. A mercenary renowned for her martial prowess, Berenice has a heart of gold and dreams of leaving the service of the Lord who hired her. When she meets Alain, that dream becomes a reality.

You can recruit Berenice by defeating her during The Mercenary's Trial Side Quest, and accepting her offer to join the Liberation Army.

Selvie

Selvie is a Shaman who can be recruited in the Overworld. She is researching the magick sigils that cover the lands of Fevrith. After she activates one, however, she encounters phantom soldiers she can't deal with alone. If you agree to help her, she'll join the Liberation Army.

You can recruit Selvie by taking to her during the Sigil of the Ancients Overworld Quest. Just talk to her and accept her quest and she'll join your party. You'll find her near Fort Lonteria.

Fran

Fran is a Gryphon Knight and major character in the Liberation Army who joins the Liberation Army during the Main Quest. A Knight of the Rose who worked closely with Miriam after Cornia fell, Fran used her skills to rescue Kitra from Zenoira before joining up with Alain and the Liberation Army.

You can recruit Fran during The Priestess, Abducted Main Quest. She, Miriam, and Kitra will automatically join your army after the mission ends.

Miriam

Miriam is a Radian Knight who joins Alain and company during the Main Quest and is a key member of the Liberation Army. Before joining forces with Alain, Miriam was a Knight of the Rose who worked closely with Clive. She joins the Liberation Army after meeting Alain during his mission to track down Renault.\

You can recruit Miriam during The Priestess, Abducted Main Quest. She, Fran, and Kitra will automatically join your army after the mission ends.

Kitra

Kitra is a Warrior and a key member of the Liberation Army. She joins your ranks during the Main Quest. Close friends with Fran and Miriam, she infiltrated Eucuit to search for intel on Renault, but was caught and subsequently rescued by Fran.

You can recruit Kitra during The Priestess, Abducted Main Quest. She, Fran, and Miriam will automatically join your army after the mission ends.
