Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth lets you befriend your party members. One, in particular, is quite a surprise, given that he wasn't an option in the original game. Here's our guide on all relationship increases for Red XIII in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Likewise, please be reminded that this article contains spoilers.
All relationship increases for Red XIII in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
Most of the details regarding the affinity system are discussed in our romance and relationships guide. Here's a quick summary on the factors that affect Cloud's relationship with other party members:
- Side quests - Complete side quests that pertain to the character. You can still tackle these later in the campaign.
- Conversations - Pick the best answer out of the three options.
- Events - Some relationship boosts are missable depending on your actions.
- Synergy Skills and Synergy Abilities - The first time you use these actions with Red XIII as your partner will grant an affinity increase.
All of these factors determine which party member becomes Cloud's companion in the Gold Saucer during Chapter 12: A Golden Key. You can check your affinity/relationship levels by pressing the L1 button, as these are denoted by a smiley face icon above a character.
Likewise, note that most of the Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Red XIII relationship increases tend to be present during the early stages of the campaign. As such, it's possible for him to have the highest affinity among all companions if you've been selecting the right conversation answers and doing everyone's side quests before Chapter 12. That also means you'd have to tackle the remaining Chapter 12 quests for Tifa or Aerith if you want them to be Cloud's date in the Gold Saucer, as those are likely to boost them past Red XIII's affinity value.

Synergy Skills and Synergy Abilities
Unlock the following via the Folio menu. Then, make sure that Cloud and Red XIII use these in tandem at least once in battle:
- Synergy Skill: Phantom Fang
- Synergy Skill: Wild Charge
- Synergy Ability: Savage Assault
- Synergy Ability: United Refocus
Chapter 2 conversation: Kalm town square
Red XIII: "One can never be too careful with Shinra."
Cloud: "I knew I could count on you."
Chapter 2 side quests: Livestock's Bane and Where the Wind Blows
Livestock's Bane has Red XIII tracking down the scent of the White Terror wolf, which has been rampaging in the Grasslands. Where the Wind Blows, meanwhile, comes from Broden, the Kalm innkeeper. To conclude this quest, you need to craft the Windmill Gear, which has a component that only comes from the Quetzalcoatl dangerous fiend.
Chapter 4 conversation: Under Junon inn
Red XIII: "I doubt I'll smell Shinra 'til it's too late."
Cloud: "Well manage."
Chapter 4 side quest: The Hardest Sell
Finish the When Words Won't Do side quest from Rhonda in Under Junon so you can enter the Crow's Nest settlement. An NPC here will ask you to tackle The Hardest Sell objective, which leads to another meeting with Kyrie.
Chapter 5 missable bonus: Queen's Blood Tournament
You have to participate in the Queen's Blood Tournament aboard the Shinra-8 ship. Defeat all opponents and win the final match against Regina. Red XIII will then surprise everyone by challenging you to a match. Here are some other tidbits:
- Winning this match against Red XIII nets you a trophy collectible, which is part of the tally once you've completed The Saga of the Seaside Inn.
- You also obtain the Ifrit legendary card, which is one of the best cards in the game.

Chapter 6 missable bonus: Costa del Sol beach battle
When the Shinra troops arrive, choose to help Tifa and Red XIII instead of Aerith and Barret. This decision grants Tifa and Red XIII relationship increases in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.

Red XIII: "I know I should strive to maintain my composure around him, but..."
Cloud: "Don't sweat it."
Chapter 7 side quest: Of Robed Men and Ransoms
Get this quest from Doctor Sheiran. The objective is to track down one of the robed men who was kidnapped, which leads you to a trap in the caves.
Chapter 9 conversation: Gongaga Memorial Hill
Red XIII will ask you which is the correct Gongaga Mushroom among the three choices. As Cloud, pick the mushroom on the right-hand side (i.e. the one that's a darker shade of pink and without any spots).
Chapter 9 side quest: O' Chicken, Where Art Thou
The objective here is to use the clanger to lure the chickens all the way back to the old woman. You also have to pull the clanger back in case the chicken's get too close. The whole thing has a rather hilarious (and expected) conclusion.
Chapter 10 conversation: Cosmo Canyon - The Torch
Red XIII: "Just forget I said anything."
Cloud: "I'll lend an ear."
Chapter 10 side quests: From Whence Life Flows and Promises to Keep
From Whence Life Flows only becomes available once you complete all the main storyline objectives in the Cosmo Canyon arc. When you're done with these tasks from Bugenhagen, that's when Promises to Keep appears on the bulletin board.
Chapter 12 missable bonus: Gold Saucer Wonderment Square
You can have another Queen's Blood match against Red XIII in the Wonderment Square. Note that you may also challenge him during Chapter 13, well after you've already picked a different companion for the sequences in the Event Square and Skywheel.
Red XIII as your Gold Saucer companion
If Red XIII has the highest affinity/relationship level among all party members by the time you rest in the Haunted Hotel in Chapter 12, then he'll be Cloud's companion. This leads to two sequences:
- Event Square: Opera - There are a lot of quick-time events (QTEs) here. All party members also gain relationship bonuses after this sequence.
- Skywheel - The two shake hands (or paws) at the end of their conversation, assuming you've reached the maximum affinity threshold (i.e. light blue color). You gain another affinity boost at the end of this scene.
