How many meals per day do prisoners get? ›

(1) Inmates confined in segregated housing shall be served food representative of that being served to general population inmates. Food shall not be withheld nor standard menu varied as a disciplinary sanction for any inmate. (2) Inmates shall be provided three meals each day, two of which shall be served hot.

It depends! California's correctional facilities aren't exactly known for their "open door" policy, but attending funerals for close relatives is a possibility. Green Haven Correctional Facility, Stormville

This maximum security prison was founded in 1949. Green Haven currently holds 2,170 inmates. Famous prisoners include mafia boss John Gotti, gangster Joey Gallo, John Lennon assassin Mark David Chapman, and murderer Ronald DeFeo, Jr.

Impact Justice's investigation found that 62 percent of respondents said they “rarely/never” had access to fresh vegetables, and nearly 55 percent said the same regarding fruit. And even when fresh food is provided, it's typically low quality.

Florida limits prisoners to $40 for a last meal and the food must be purchased locally. Oklahoma has a $25 limit. Gilbert Postelle, executed in 2022 for shooting four people to death, had a McDonald's-style meal, said Oklahoma Department of Corrections spokesperson Kay Thompson.

Over the course of human history, the tradition of last meal evolved. "The Puritans of Massachusetts once held grand feasts for the condemned, believing it emulated the Last Supper of Christ, representing a communal atonement for the community and the prisoner," read a portion of the paper.

Hunger Strike

In the most extreme circ*mstances, a court order may be sought authorizing forced food ingestion. During the hunger strike, any inmate refusing to eat or drink shall have three (3) meals per day presented to them and must be allowed to refuse or accept each individual meal.
