To get the closest color match to the item you are dyeing, try using one of our color formulas. We have over 500.

This method works best with Rit All-Purpose Dye on natural fabrics, like cotton, linen, silk, wool and ramie. It will also work on nylon and rayon.Fabrics containing more than 35% synthetic material (such as polyester, acrylic or acetate) are more challenging to color correct with this method. However, we do have some tips below.

Can you spot dye clothes with Rit? ›

Wearing rubber gloves, pour 2 tablespoons / 30 mL of well-shaken Rit DyeMore into 1/2 cup / 120 mL of boiling water. Stir well. Dip a small corner of a piece of clean cloth into the hot dye, gently squeezing out the excess. Rub the area where you wish to apply the dye.

How do I fix my Rit dye mistakes? ›

If you are working with cotton, linen, silk, wool or ramie and don't like the color, you can remove it using Rit Color Remover. It will bring the fabric to a white or cream color. Then you can re-dye the garment to another color!

Can you leave Rit dye on too long? ›

Item can remain in dyebath from 10 minutes up to one hour with stirring. If dyeing a polyester cotton blend, keep the fabric in the dyebath for at least 30 minutes to ensure that the color takes fully. Nylon tends to dye very quickly and much darker than other fibers so the actual time needed in the dyebath is less.

How do I make sure my Rit dye doesn't bleed? ›

If you are dyeing cotton, linen, silk, wool, ramie or rayon, use Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative immediately after dyeing, but before rinsing and laundering. For all other fibers, rinse the fabric in warm water to gradually cooler water until the water runs clear.

If your fabric dye job turned out splotchy, with low saturation in some areas, you could try overdyeing, or you could run the yardage through the wash to see if any remaining excess dye redistributes to the unsaturated areas.

Can I use vinegar to set Rit dye? ›

Rit Dye sells a color fixative to set the dye. However, salt and vinegar are both natural fixatives and can be a good alternative. One-fourth cup of salt, one cup of vinegar, and one gallon of water seem to be the norm.

Consider the 'spot treating' dyeing technique when there is a small area that is a different colour than the rest of your garment. This technique may help you 'touch up' a small lighter area in your fabric. For more accurate colour results always test the dye colour before on a 'scrap of fabric'.

Does Rit dye rub off on clothes? ›

We do not recommend using Rit to dye upholstered fabric because after the dye is applied, the excess dye must be removed. This can be difficult to achieve with furniture and if the excess dye is not completely removed, it can rub off on clothing.

Does Rit dye work on stains? ›

Rit will not cover stains. However, you can still dye the item an even color as long as you remove the stains first. We recommend using Rit Super Stain Remover or Rit Color Remover to do this.
