Saw this in the local Craigslist this morning.

Shouldn't this be in a museum ?

Or is this a reissue or a "fabulous fake" ? http://www.edroman.com/featured/fabulousfakes.htm

8K for a $2500 recreation ?

Dubious. No info whether or not there is supporting documentation. hmmmmmm

I would think it would be at Christie's for $250K.

Didn't he light that guitar on fire and then smash it to bits? That is the iconic moment of that performance......The guitar in this ad is way too clean to have been burned and smashed.

+1. Even if this were real, it would be more than 8k

The original Fiesta Red (Salmon Pink) Strat that Hendrix painted and decorated for the Monterey Pop stage was "sacrificed" onstage. it was covered with lighter fluid, and set on fire. I can't remember if it was also smashed. But, I think that it was. Fender's Custom Shop made about 200 exact replicas of this guitar that were authorized by the Hendrix family. We had a small network worldwide of no more than 75-100 "Diamond Dealers". These Diamond Dealers were the only customers who culd buy this limited edition guitar and a few other very limited, very expensive hand built guitar models that each came with extravagant cases, leather gig bags, and unique to each model documentation. I personally sold a dozen or so of the Hendrix Monterey Strat. Most Diamond Dealers either kept one or more for themselves or sold them for enormous profits. There are certain "former" Fender dealers who have fabricated fakes. I will not call out one of the most well known and most phony of all the fakers here on the DFO.

When the first Hendrix Monterey Strat arrived in Texas, the shop owner in Houston was at the NAMM show in California. He had told his sales staff that, when this guitar came in, it was to be put on his desk in his office unopened. When he came home from the NAMM show, one of his salesman bragged to him that, in the boss's absence, he sold a very expensive Fender Custom Shop Strat FOR FULL RETAIL. That salesman was very fortunate to keep his job and his gonads. The store owner had become a good friend over many years. He asked me if he could get another one for himself. I had to inform him that, several months earlier, he was offered the opportunity to order one or two. He opted for one. And, no more in the Diamond Dealer series would ever be made..........by Fender.

Buyer beware of alleged "authentic" ones offered online. A real expert should authenticate the actual guitar being offered. Never take the owrd of the seller unless that seller is one of those experts. Not every seller claiming expert status is a real stand-up expert.

I forgot which guitar he set on fire!!! I admit I just didn't follow Hendrix stage antics. I knew Dweezil Zappa had one of the guitars set on fire (or so I heard).

$8k would be a steal if it were a true-on Fender Custom Shop replica made for a diamond dealer. But since the Custom Shop wasn't even mentioned, it is probably 1/10,000 fakes made by one of the few good or one of the many bad replicators. I never tackled one of these. Tom Murphy Jr., I am not; I am a mere hobbyist. I did my own SRV #1 that I gave as a gift to a bar several years ago (I did not make one penny on it), as well as a few Frankenstein and Frankenstein inspired guitars (hanging in my own basem*nt), but never did the Hendrix guitars.

Great post, but it's a good thing that your Avatar doesn't have the Ten Commandments. It would be removed and Crigger would be all over you in a second. I once got a PM from a Mod because I "shouted" that "a trillion is a thousand billion." Go figure. Ace

There should be a way to authenticate if it is one of the ones reproduced by Fender. That would be worth a good amount. Ace

Even if that guitar was owned by Joe Shmo, it'd be worth more than that just because of its age. That is definitely a re-issue at best. Maybe a fake. Either way, seller is trying to pull a fast one.

The saddest thing is that a clean '61 Strat is still going roughly for that same amount cuurently. Dad got out while the gettin' was good...

My grandpa sold his early 60s strat in the 90s for like $500 just trying to get rid of it. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

While that was nearly stealing it, they didn't get stratospheric until the late '90s. If you think of it, gramps still made a profit!!!

i was very sad they day he sold it, i remember as a kid laying in the case of the guitar playing like it was a coffin. Red velvet liner looked just like one and you know kids they find humpor in the strangest things....

Around 2002, I got a brand new Les Paul Standard Goldtop, for $950.00. They stopped selling them off the rack about that time. You had to order them from the custom shop. The guy bought it to just hold on to, but changed his mind and went PRS. I am just holding on now. I think they are worth about $2000.00 now. They sure have strong pickups. Ace
