Our family’s hearts are broken to announce the very suddenand unexpected passing of Mitchell Blake Washkowsky, 30 years, ofHumboldt, Saskatchewan on October 24, 2022. Mitchell lived passionately, unapologetically and on his own terms. During his time, he touched the lives of an uncountable amount of people in ways he never even knew.
Mitchell was the firstborn of a set of twins born on October 15, 1992, inSaskatoon, Saskatchewan. Mitchell was extremely active from the verybeginning, taking his first steps at a mere 9 months old and runningshortly after. It was certainly a sign of things to come.
Mitchell obtained his elementary and high school education in Humboldt and graduated from Humboldt Collegiate Institute in 2010. As ayoung child, Mitchell actively participated in hockey, bowling, soccer, weightlifting and many other extracurricular school sports. His feet always had to be moving, which is something that never changed. As he wasgrowing up, Mitchell’s passion for music continued to expand and hepossessed a very natural skill with the guitar, drums and many otherinstruments. It was just one of the many skills that seemed to come so very naturally to him. He loved music - creating it, playing it and definitelylistening to it. His genres of choice was always first and foremost punk rock and heavy metal, but he had a very broad interest in music ranging from classical to contemporary to country to symphonies. And, of course, Sinatra was always a favorite.
His talented passion in music and socializing came together in 2013 when he formed his own company, Capital Record DJ Services, where heprovided DJ and karaoke services for a large number of people and events over the past decade. Mitchell was highly active and took the opportunity to socialize and connect with others as often as he could. He lovedsnowboarding, chicken wings, skateboarding, Pilsner, hiking, hot sauce, fishing, mustard, seadooing, oysters on the half shell, cycling, butterchicken, traveling, Vern’s Pizza, camping, The Simpsons, tattoos and had recently joined a bowling team. While most people would slow down after a major knee injury, Mitchell wasn’t most people. Sitting still had to usually involve a game of cribbage, a cold Pilsner with friends, movies, or greatliterature.
2019 was a busy year for Mitchell. He convocated from the University of Regina with a Bachelor of Arts in English, a Bachelor of Education withDistinction, and a Certificate in Inclusive Education. At the same time, Mitchell also went through the Induction Training Program with theMinistry of Justice Corrections and Policing, which allowed him to obtain casual employment with the Paul Dojack Youth Center in Regina. In his love for higher learning Mitchell was looking forward to starting his Masters degree in Education this spring.
Following convocation, Mitchell was employed full-time by Regina Public School Division, serving a two-year term at Winston Knoll Collegiate,followed by a year at Campbell Collegiate. Over the last six years whileattending university and working as an educator, Mitchell also worked as a dedicated caregiver for Chris and Jay, two gentlemen with Down’sSyndrome. He loved spending time with “the guys” who were so special to him and it brought him great joy to also be their roommate and good friend.
In the summer of 2022, his wish to return to his hometown was granted when he was able to join the staff at Humboldt Collegiate Institute as the Learning Resource Teacher. This was his dream job and he was so incredibly excited that things had come full circle. He was happy to be home. He very much looked forward to starting the next chapter of his life in his hometown with his fiancé Danielle. His time at HCI was short, but his impact wassignificant.
Mitchell lived with passion and without fear. The injuries and mishaps were frequent, but it was the price of the adventures he enjoyed so much. Through this lifestyle, Mitchell experienced more and traveled more in his all too brief 30 years than many of us will in a lifetime. Mitchell brought people together and was always the key figure in the room. He valued, heard, and loved others around him. He was ambitious and never afraid of hard work. He enjoyed watching young people work hard to become the best version of themselves and saw the potential in what everyone could be.
Mitchell is survived by his fiancé Daniell Skillingstad, parents Lori Washkowsky and Brent Lucyk, siblings Ryan (Tammy) and their children Kadynce and Katherine, twin brother Matthew, and sister Emily, along with his grandmother Leona Washkowsky, and his aunt Rhonda (Martin) Been.
He will be incredibly missed.
As Mitchell said to his students at the end of each day: Make good choices; be good people; do good things.
A Celebration of Life for Mitchell was held on Sunday, October 30, 2022, at 1 p.m. Jubilee Hall in Humboldt. Memorial donations in Mitchell's memory may be directed to the Mitchell Washkowsky Scholarship Fund or Heart & Stoke Foundation of Saskatchewan.
