The user in question is Deon, aka quietthunder06 on FanDuel. I got in touch with Deon to gauge the type of user he is — to see if he was a secret pro, a sharp just biding his time, or if he was in fact your everyday fan who enjoyed DFS in the way most of our readers do.
What I learned is that Deon is a regular DFS player and has been for a number of years. He has been a Stokastic subscriber since last fall, playing NBA and NFL DFS “all the time” — pretty much the most common type of subscriber we see here at Stokastic.
In terms of his profile as a player, he said that his biggest cash ever was $8,900 — so this one was pretty close to his all-time best. He 150-maxed this FanDuel contest as well, which again is common among our users, but also indicates Deon’s level of bankroll for a weekend FanDuel NBA slate.
So that is Deon as a DFS player, boiled down to his essence: A 150-maxer with some high-level cashes in his time as a player who favors the most popular DFS sports.
Next I asked Deon about his process with the Sims, his overall strategy and any pointers he uses when building out his lineups.
If you check out Office Hours with Steve “dacoltz” Buzzard in Discord on Thursdays, he gives a lot of tips as to how he tweaks the Sims (or doesn’t tweak the Sims) depending on his personal preference, the contests he is playing, what have.
But Steve wins more than anyone and, you know, helped develop our Stokastic Sims. Obviously, his advice is sound and works; but what about a user who isn’t in the weeds with this stuff 24/7?
Deon had a couple of pretty simple strategy points with the Sims. For the most part, he follows the advice that our team lays out: Make sure your settings are correct in both the Contest Generator and Pre-Contest Simulator for contest size, stakes and percent to first, and then sort by ROI when the Pre-Contest simulations are done. This ensures that you are maximizing the ROI of your lineup selections based on the type of contest (high buy-in, main GPPs, etc.).
But then there is the matter of some personal intuition. Sure, you can simply roll with what the Sims churn out for you and make no changes to projections, and many users find success doing so. However, Deon made a few tweaks to fit the specific slate. Specifically, he boosted the projections for Andrew Nembhard and T.J. McConnell when Tyrese Haliburton was ruled out — a savvy move, and those guys crushed. He also gave a bump to a few players’ fantasy points per minute since they were on hot streaks in the series.
This is a great example of what the Sims can be for you. Our Sims tool is phenomenal and a winning product night in and night out. But it is also a tool; you can use your own instincts and knowledge to adjust the data as you see fit and make sure you are getting lineups that you are happy with AND can win you cash.
