Tattoo Aftercare (2024)

Tattoo Aftercare (1)

We care as much about your new tattoo as you do, and there’s a few things you need to do to keep your tattoo looking sharp.. and healthy.

After your tattoo is complete, your artist will place a ‘second skin’ over the work to protect it. This is either a second-skin patch or plastic wrap – both act as a protective barrier for the first stage of the healing process.

SECOND - SKIN

Your second-skin lets you get on with life. It’s water resistant, so you can shower with it, but avoid prolonged water exposure. Wear loose clothing too if you can, to avoid abrasion to the area.

While you’re wearing the second-skin, you might notice the surface underneath accumulating slight moisture, which can make the tattoo look blurry. This is plasma building up from your skin and pulling up micro fragments of ink – it’s a completely normal part of the healing process.

Keep the second-skin on for a minimum of 1-2 days, and a maximum of 7 days after your appointment. After this, slowly and gently remove it under warm running water. The second-skin is meant to adhere tightly to your skin, so you might need to use some force when removing it. Don’t be alarmed if there are spots of ink on the second-skin –it’s those micro fragments again, and it’s normal.

If the second-skin causes any discomfort or begins to peel off before three days, remove it (the same way as above), wash the area thoroughly and once completely dry apply Tattoo Aftercare Balm.

Discomfort includes rare cases where an allergic reaction to adhesive bandages occur. This includes but not limited to red bumps, blistering and itchiness under the second skin in areas that are not tattooed.

Plastic wrap

After 1-2 hours remove the plastic wrap when you get home and rinse off the area with lukewarm water and a mild, unscented liquid soap. Your tattoo artist may recommend re-wrapping your new tattoo before going to bed –this is to make sure plasma run-off doesn’t dry out and cause irritation when you move in your sleep. If you do re-wrap your new ink, remove the wrap and rinse the area (as before) the following day, and use a very thin layer of quality Tattoo Aftercare Balm.

Red Hot Tips

For 10-12 days after you remove your second-skin or plastic wrap use your aftercare balm and be sure to apply only a smooth, very thin layer, enough to cover your new tattoo but please DON’T oversaturate the area, as this can impact healing. Keep it thin!

You know your body best! Keep in mind unsanitary surfaces, abrasive clothing and sweat can cause irritation, additional scarring and even infection.

Avoid submerging your tattoo in water, too, or exposing it to direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time for a full month. Water exposure can cause serious infection, and direct sunlight can overly dry the area while it is healing or cause premature fading.

PLEASE NOTE: This advice intends to to aid the healing of your tattoo with the best possible pigment/ink retention, vibrancy and clarity - and to avoid inflection. If you require medical advice, please don’t hesitate to see your GP. Your Doctor will give you the best medical advice.

FAQs

-Continue to wash & moisturize at least once per day. -Until the tattoo is healed, avoid prolonged sun exposure and the beach, avoid getting overly sweaty, avoid submerging your tattoo entirely in water (i.e. bath, pool, ocean, etc.), and avoid tight clothing on the area that was tattooed.

What can you not do after a tattoo? ›

How long should you keep your tattoo covered after? ›

With this method, the tattoo is kept completely covered with plastic wrap 24 hours a day, usually for 48-72 hours.

Can I use Aquaphor on my tattoo? ›

How long after a tattoo can you shower normally? ›

You can shower 3-4 hours after getting a tattoo, if you have a Saniderm bandage on, however, if you have a plastic wrap wait 24 hours to unwrap your tattoo and shower. In either case, shower in cold or lukewarm water and avoid prolonged soaking or submerging your tattoo in water for 3-4 weeks.

What lotion not to use on a new tattoo? ›

Tattoo should not look “soggy”. DO NOT use products containing Aloe Vera, Alcohol or Cortisone.

What is poor tattoo aftercare? ›

Poor aftercare

Not taking proper aftercare precautions could also contribute to patchiness; picking scabs off your new tattoo, swimming or submerging it in the bath, exposing it to UV rays while it's still in the early stages of healing could all lead to ink loss and patchiness.

What is not normal after a tattoo? ›

A skin infection is possible after getting a tattoo. An infection might be due to contaminated ink or equipment that isn't sterilized correctly. Getting a tattoo at a studio that doesn't follow good safety steps also can raise your risk of a skin infection.

How to care for a tattoo the first night? ›

Your first night sleeping, your artist might recommend you re-wrap the tattoo with plastic wrap (like Saran Wrap) to sleep without the tattoo sticking to your sheets. This is generally for larger or solid-color tattoos. If your artist did not recommend re-wrapping, just let the tattoo stay exposed to air overnight.

Can you sleep with a new tattoo uncovered? ›

You'll want to keep the tattoo wrapped for at least the first night because it will take a while for it to settle down and stop leaking. You don't want an open wound like that touching your bed sheets, getting blood everywhere, or dirt and dust getting into the wound itself.

Is vaseline okay for tattoos? ›

What NOT to do? DON'T re-bandage your tattoo, rub, scratch or pick at your new tattoo. DON'T apply alcohol, Neosporin, Vaseline, or petroleum jelly (they can trap dirt and germs and cause infection).

What are the stages of tattoo healing? ›

What's the best thing to put on a new tattoo? ›

Apply the Aquaphor or Bacitracin 2-3 times a day (Remember, keep it light!) for the first 5-7 days or until your tattoo starts to flake/peel like a sunburn. When to stop washing a tattoo twice a day? ›

Until the surface of the tattoo is healed (at a minimum of two to three weeks), wash the area gently 2-3 times per day. After cleaning the tattoo during this two to three week period, gently apply a thin coat of a lotion-based care product. We recommend After Inked tattoo moisturizer and aftercare lotion.

What is the best cream to put on a new tattoo? ›

Aquaphor's all-purpose ointment won a top spot in the 2022 Good Housekeeping Beauty Awards for its nourishing glycerin and panthenol formula. It creates a protective barrier that allows skin to heal and prevents moisture loss, according to the GH Beauty, Health & Sustainability Lab's data evaluation.

What kind of ointment do you put on tattoos? ›

Gently wash off excess ointment and fluids from tattoo with clean, bare hand. Pat dry with a clean, single-use paper towel; do not rub with towel. Apply a thin layer of antibiotic ointment such as Bacitracin™ Zinc Oxide ointment, Neosporin™ or Vitamin A&D ointment.
