The Importance of Senior Night (2024)

Senior night is a cherished tradition among high school athletes. It’s a special ceremony in honor of the seniors in their last home game. This ceremony recognizes the hard work and dedication that these senior athletes have put into their education, as well as extracurricular activities.

These athletes have poured countless hours practicing, training outside of practice, and studying in order to perform their absolute best. This night is a time of reflection for most athletes. The underclassmen who watch this ceremony think about how they have one to two seasons still left to play, without realizing how quickly those last couple of years go by. The seniors think back on all of the notable memories that they’ve made alongside their teammates over the years.

Mario Arellano (12) varsity football linebacker said, “As a kid I watched my brother do his senior night, and in a blink of an eye, it’s my turn and it was a bittersweet moment because I knew the sport that I had been playing and watching my whole life was coming to an end soon. Seeing my family walk down that field with me was just a moment that I just had to enjoy every second of.”

Senior night gives a chance for an entire school to show their appreciation for these graduating athletes. A time to express gratitude for the positive influence that these athletes spread to others on campus.

Lorenzo Chavez (12) varsity football linebacker said, “Seeing all my family down on the field with me and up in the stands who were there from day one supporting me felt good. They got some recognition and it really showed who helped me get to where I am today.”

Senior night is an important ceremony in the lives of senior athletes and even those witnessing the ceremony. A moment where all can recognize the athletes achievements, recognize their families, and support them for their very last time on the field.
