The Science Behind Flowers and Happiness | Darcey Flowers (2024)

From expressing joy and love to sympathy and condolences, we send flowers to convey a wide range of emotions. Regardless of the circ*mstances, when we send flowers, we hope to bring a smile and a bit of joy to the recipient’s day. After all, most of us feel happier when we are surrounded by flowers and plants.

The research behind happiness and flowers

In 2005, University of Rutgers psychology professor Jeannette Haviland-Jones, Ph.D., and her team of researchers set out to explore the link between flowers and happiness. During the 10-month study, titled An Emotional Approach to Positive Emotions: Flowers (2005), researchers studied the participants’ behavioral and emotional responses to receiving one of three gifts: flowers, candles, and fruit.

The reaction of the participants was observed and recorded. Unsurprisingly, the results confirmed flowers create a positive impact on mood and overall emotional well-being. Regardless of age group, participants were happy to receive the flowers. Additionally, the study also recorded participants were less anxious or depressed for three days after they received flowers.

  1. Flowers instantly impact happiness and overall well-being. Throughout the course of the study, participants who received flowers expressed “true” or “excited” smiles, “demonstrating extraordinary delight and gratitude.”
  2. Flowers create a lasting positive influence on mood. Specifically, after receiving flowers, study participants reported feeling less agitated, depressed, and anxious. They also exhibited a greater sense of happiness and satisfaction in their lives.
  3. Flowers create connections and build relationships. The study showed that those individuals who received flowers experienced increased contact with friends and family.

“Common sense tells us that flowers make us happy,” said Dr. Haviland-Jones. “Now, science shows that not only do flowers make us happier than we know, but they also have strong positive effects on our emotional well-being.”

Where should you place your flowers?

In addition to studying how people feel when they receive flowers, the Rutgers study also explored where people displayed their flowers. In most cases, the flowers were placed in common areas, such as living rooms or foyers, for everyone to see and enjoy. “Flowers bring about positive emotional feelings in those who enter a room,” said Dr. Haviland-Jones. “They make the space more welcoming and create a sharing atmosphere.”

Spread happiness with flowers

Flowers have the power to brighten the recipient’s day, even during the bleakest of times. The right bouquet or arrangement provides relief from stress, while simultaneously inspiring pleasant feelings. While there are many flowers that are likely to brighten someone’s day, there are a few specific blooms guaranteed to make the recipient smile.

Tulips: Simple and soft, tulips come in a wide range of striking colors which are perfect for brightening someone’s day or making them feel better.

Delphiniums: elegant and cheerful, delphiniums are available in a variety of colors to brighten up the room and the recipient’s attitude.

Roses: Classic and versatile, roses are a great way to show your feelings through color. For example, red roses are symbolic of romance, yellow roses pay tribute to friendship, and pink roses express love.

Sunflowers: Bright and cheerful, sunflowers chase the sun all day long. Their heads always find the light! These are perfect for adding a touch of joy and happiness to the room and your life.
