Unity Wings and Their Meaning

“The winged globe or sun disk, as a religious symbol, had its earliest use in Egypt, but it is found in various forms in the religions of other races. it represents the relation existing between Spirit, soul, and body. Soul gives wings to the body. Spirit is the enveloping principle, like the atmosphere in which both soul and body exist, and from which they draw their original ispiration.

“The winged globe is also a symbol of the earth and its soul.

“As humanity develops spiritual consciousness, it attains the realization of the soul as the wings of the body. Artists paint their angels with wings, representing in this way their freedom from physical fetters. But the soul does not have wings like a bird. The life activity of the soul is quickened by Spirit until it rises above the thoughts of matter and floats free in the fourth dimension, which Jesus called the kingdom of the heavens.” (1930s vintage Unity literature – by Charles Fillmore)

“The ‘winged globe’ (now referred to as ‘The Winged Soul’), the emblem printed on all Unity publications (for so many years), symbolizes mind conscious of its spiritual origin and power. The design originated as a symbol of the perfect soul in Chaldean and Egyptian occultism. It emblematizes the soul in its flight back to the Supreme – its original Source in absolute love and wisdom. It is a sacred symbol of the illumined of antiquity; it is also the distinctive insignia of an occult society that existed in Egypt some thousands of year ago. The great pyramid was constructed under the direction of that society. The society is again manifesting itself in the world in the building of a temple ‘not made with hands,’ of whose permanency and just proportions of the great Cheops is the geometrical symbol. The new temple will be a unified humanity by whom God is universally recognized as infinite supply, the bountiful Father, the one supreme Source of life, love and intelligence.” (Quotation discovered in 1940 vintage Unity magazine.)
