There are few things I crave more in this world than Chipotle‘s guacamole. Specifically, a burrito bowl with a large heaping scoop of guac and chips on the side. However, their guacamole is more expensive than making it at home. As a result, I’ve perfected the ultimate Chipotle guacamole recipe so that you never need to miss out on their flavor again.

Instructions

STEP 1:

red onion

Dice half a red onion so that the pieces are cut into small squares.

STEP 2:

lime

Squeeze the juice of two limes into a glass and set aside.

STEP 3:

jalapeño

Dice half of a jalapeño finely.

STEP 4:

avocado

Open each avocado and carefully remove the pit.

lime juice

Scoop the flesh from the avocados into a large bowl and add the red onion, lime juice, and jalapeño.

STEP 6:

Mix thoroughly until creamy and add salt.

Chop up the cilantro finely to add at the end with one last stir. Serve cold with chips.

The truth is that all you need to make Chipotle guacamole is some fresh and ripe avocados. They make their guacamole in store with fresh ingredients, so picking the best avocados at the grocery store is your first step to making truly excellent guac that mirrors Chipotle.

Next, Chipotle guacamole includes red onion, jalapeño, lime juice, cilantro, and salt. It’s a pretty simple list that just requires some fine chopping and a thorough mix.

Interestingly, there is a lot of red onion in Chipotle guac, so we encourage you to add the entire half of a red onion even if it seems like a lot. This is what creates the same flavor as the popular Mexican chain restaurant.

Based on my experience, Chipotle’s guacamole flavor comes from the lime juice, red onion, and salt. These are the key flavors that stick out immediately with every bite. As I mentioned, there is more red onion in this guacamole recipe than most, which is unique to Chipotle. If you’re not a fan of red onion, you can of course tweak the amount to your preferences.

Two limes can seem like a lot of lime juice at first. However, this makes it taste tart and fresh. Additionally, when you’re mixing your guac, it will thin out some of the creaminess from the avocado. This helps the texture feel really smooth.

The other ingredients such as cilantro and jalapeño add zest to the guacamole and really bring everything together. Ultimately, this Chipotle guacamole recipe is copying the super flavorful taste and texture of the real thing. You will not miss any ingredient while enjoying this snack, so I cannot express how important the ratio of ingredients is to keep it authentic to Chipotle.

How long can this guacamole recipe last in the fridge?

The good news is that this Chipotle guacamole recipe includes a lot of lime juice, which helps preserve the avocados. As a result, it should help the guacamole stay fresh for longer and avoid turning brown quickly. However, that being said, it will still probably go brown in 3-4 days.

If you’re having a party where you want to serve this Chipotle guac, I’d recommend making it on the day of instead of the day before. That way, your guac is as fresh as it can be and then you can still enjoy it for another few days before it needs to be thrown away.

How should I store guacamole?

The best tip I have for storing guacamole includes having a glass storage container. I like the lids on food storage containers to seal because that prevents oxygen from getting into your guacamole and turning it brown faster. There are tons of options available on Amazon that work well.

If you do not have containers that work well, you can place in a bowl with some kind of cover on top. An environmentally friendly option is actually Beeswax paper. This material works even better than plastic wrap to preserve guacamole in my experience.

Lastly, you can add one of the pits back into the guac until you’re ready to enjoy the recipe again. It has been proven that the pit of the avocado keeps it from going brown in addition to some of these other methods.

How do you remove the avocado pit?

This is a kitchen skill that can be intimidating if you’ve never done it before. It can be easy to remove an avocado pit with a knife, but you have to perform this skill very carefully. In the video I filmed above, I show you how to do it correctly. Make sure your knife is very sharp or else, you risk injuring yourself because the avocado and pit can be slippery.

It’s best to strike the pit with your knife quickly with a lot of force. This will then slice into the pit enough to grab onto it and you can twist and pull it out of the avocado flesh. Discard of your pit and you are left with a perfect avocado half. Again, I cannot express how much caution this step requires. Please watch the video a few times before attempting at home and be sure to watch your fingers.

While not necessary, some people also use this handy tool from Amazon to remove avocado pits. It takes away any risk and also provides a way to slice it as well.
