Cheat Codes are words that can be entered during gameplay to affect the zombies (except for trickedout). They may be typed at any time while the game is running. The effect is applied after the last letter is typed. There is no need to press enter.
In the console versions of Plants vs. Zombies, an "enter cheat code" menu is required. To bring it up in the Xbox Live Arcade version,the playermust enter LB, RB, LT, RT. In the PlayStation 3 version, it is L1, R1, L2, R2. All original codes will work for both versions.
In the PlayStation Vita version, to be able to enter the codes,the playermust have the Tree of Wisdom, but they do not have to grow it to 1000 feet to unlock all the codes, unlike in other versions. Whenthe playerbuys the tree, a flower with a question mark in it will appear on the home screen, click it and a raven will say "Enter Code", with a keyboard showing up for the purpose of typing the codes.
There do not appear to be any codes within the Nintendo DS, iPhone and Android versions of the game. In the Nintendo DSversion, the playercan use Action Replay for getting cheats, but it has to be on a Nintendo DSi version.
To disable an activated code, simply type it again.
Note: Some codes won't activate ifthe player'sTree of Wisdom isn't tall enough on most versions; the playermust grow it 100 feet to use daisies, 500 feet for dance and 1000 feet for a pinata.

Trivia[]
- The last code (↑↑↓↓←→←→BA) is mentioned by Crazy Davebefore playing level 5-10, but he doesn't finish it. This sequence is a variation of the Konami Code, a famous cheat code found in many different video games.
- On the PlayStation Vita version, there is a rare glitch where "dance" is usable even when the Tree of Wisdom is not yet 500 feet tall.
- The code "sukhbir" is a reference to Sukhbir Sidhu, who was a studio director at PopCap at the time Plants vs Zombies was released.
- Many codes make sounds when they are entered:
- When"future" is typed, it will make a jack-in-the-box popping out sound.
- When "mustache" or "moustache" is typed, it will make a Pole Vaulting Zombie sound.
- When "trickedout" is typed, it will make the same sound a Zomboni makes when it enters the lawn.
- When "sukhbir" is typed, it will make the zombies growl.
- When "dance" is typed, it will make the same sound the Dancing Zombie makes when he summons Backup Dancers.
- When "pinata" and "daisies" are typed, they will simply make popping sounds.
- So far, "mustache" and "moustache" are the only codes that have their own achievement.
