If you are dyeing cotton, linen, silk, wool, ramie or rayon, use Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative immediately after dyeing, but before rinsing and laundering. For all other fibers, rinse the fabric in warm water to gradually cooler water until the water runs clear.

Use cold water over hot water when washing. Hot water can loosen up the fabric and increase the likelihood of color bleeding. When possible, adjust your washer settings to delicate or something similar to reduce the amount of friction inside the washing machine.

Use cold water when washing and rinsing colored clothes to help colors last longer. Sort your clothing carefully and correctly before loading the clothes washer. Wash colored clothing inside out to help a little bit with the color bleed.

Placing unbound fabric into the bath could result in dye bleeding into the white areas. If you are working with fabric that was ombré dyed or dip dyed, Only place the dyed part of the garment into the bath. If you submerge the entire garment, dye could bleed into other areas.

I've only used Rit Dye to dye fabric. After the dye process, the directions say to rinse the fabric until the water runs clear, then wash the items as you normally would and then dry the items as you normally would.

Add 1 cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle or one-half cup salt to the wash to help hold in colors. Use color-catcher sheets, which trap extraneous dyes during the wash cycle to prevent bleeding. Don't overstuff your dryer. Clothes will dry faster.

Stir in 1 c (8.0 fl oz) of white vinegar and 1 tbsp (17.5 g) of salt. Measure the vinegar and salt into the water. Use your hand or a wooden spoon to mix the solution until the salt dissolves. The vinegar and salt helps to fix the dye into the fibres of the fabric.

Hot water tends to open fabric fibres, which encourages the dye to escape and run, while cold water keeps them closed, trapping the dye inside to prevent bleeding. The cold setting on your washing machine will eliminate most problems with colour bleeding and may even help clothes last longer.

Rinsing with hot water is one of the leading causes of color bleeding. After all, heat opens the hair cuticle, potentially releasing precious color molecules. Embrace cool water throughout the rinsing process to gently close the cuticle and trap the color molecules.

Salt and vinegar won't do the trick.

Similarly, salt allows the fibers to absorb the dye during the dying process but it does not prevent the dye from running or crocking after it has set.

Check the label and make sure the detergent does not contain chlorine bleach. But in general, any detergent used in cold water is the best detergent to stop colors from bleeding and fading.
