If you are using Rit DyeMore Synthetic Dye, we recommend first heating up the dyebath on your stove to almost boiling. The most realistic test would be to use a scrap piece of fabric from the garment you are dyeing and leave it in the dyebath for 5 minutes.

Test color by dipping a paper towel into the dyebath. If color is too light, add more dye. If color is too dark, add more water. Wet the fabric, squeeze out any excess water and add it to the dyebath.

Add 1 teaspoon of dish detergent to help promote level dyeing. As a general guideline, one liquid bottle or two powder packages dyes up to two pounds of dry fabric.

If you are dyeing with Rit All-Purpose Dye: To enhance the color: (1) add 1 cup of salt when dyeing fabrics containing cotton, rayon, ramie or linen; (2) add 1 cup of vinegar when dyeing fabrics containing nylon, silk or wool.

If you are dyeing cotton, linen, silk, wool, ramie or rayon, use Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative immediately after dyeing, but before rinsing and laundering. For all other fibers, rinse the fabric in warm water to gradually cooler water until the water runs clear.

It will work, but it's possible the dye will turn out uneven. I also suggest testing the method out on something with the same fabric content if possible before dyeing a huge project like this. Also be aware of rust possibilities I it has any metal component like rings at the top.

It really depends on the desired shade and fabric. To achieve the color on the box or bottle, we suggest 30 to 60 minutes with continuous stirring. For lighter shades, we suggest 10 to 20 minutes.

Rit loves hot water because it loosens the fibers in the fabric to accept the dye. We recommend using the hottest water safe for your fabric.

If you dyed fabric with cotton, linen, ramie, or rayon, use Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative, or use a DIY method to set the color. Wash the fabric with like colors and a mild detergent on a low heat setting, then dry it on hot.

EYE CONTACT: Wash immediately with large volumes of fresh water for at least 15 minutes. Get medical attention. SKIN CONTACT: Wipe off with a towel. Wash with soap and water.

Rit dye has only come off for me with abrasive wear. No solvent that I've tried including electric parts cleaner has taken it off. Your best bet after dying is to rinse the knife several times in hot water and cold water because it usually will bleed for a few days. After that it's pretty permanent.

As a general guideline, one box of powder dye or 4 ounces of liquid dye will color one pound of dry weight fabric (about 3 yards of lightweight fabric or two adult large t-shirts). To obtain a lighter color, use less dye.

There is no difference in terms of color or dye performance. The liquid dye is already dissolved in water and more concentrated than the powder dye. So you only need to use half as much when using the liquid dye.

If you are working with cotton, linen, silk, wool or ramie and don't like the color, you can remove it using Rit Color Remover. It will bring the fabric to a white or cream color. Then you can re-dye the garment to another color!

To further set the dye, use a hot steam iron. Sandwich the treated area between two clean cloths or paper towels, then press. To enhance the color and reduce color bleeding, use Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative immediately after dyeing and before washing, following these instructions.

If you are dyeing synthetic fabric (i.e. fabric containing more than 35% polyester, acrylic or acetate) with Rit DyeMore, then you cannot use this method. Due to the complexity of dyeing synthetics, you must use the stovetop method to maintain an almost boiling temperature for the duration of your dyeing.

Rit works best in hot water and the heat from the microwave speeds up the dyeing process, heating the water so the dye absorbs quickly into the fabric. Perfect for tie-dyeing, wax-less batik dyeing, dye painting, dyeing paper and marbling up to one yard of fabric.
